Review of 2005
In 2005, 77 departures were handled by CCCB. Six of these were directly connected with the popular "Sail 2005" tourist event. Five arrivals in 2005 brought German, American and British tourists to Bremerhaven and its surroundings. All the other vessels were either ending or restarting their cruises at the Columbus Quay, with a total of about 72,000 passengers passing through Bremerhaven.
As a result of this success, CCCB could consolidate and enhance its leading position as a modern and convemient terminal for cruise passengers in Germany. Veit Hürdler, Managing Director of CCCB, put it this way, "Our main purpose in attracting new vessels to Bremerhaven is still to increase the number of passengers using a stopover for a visit to the nearby region“. About 7,500 day-visitors were invited on board by the cruise lines, where they were able to enjoy a special programme developed for cruise guests.
Season 2006
This year's season begins on April 23 with the expected arrival of Phoenix Reisen's TS Albatros at the Columbus Quay. The cruise vessels "Amadea", "Arielle", "Princess Danae" and "Braemar" will also be making their first calls at Bremerhaven.
74 visits are planned for 2006 with a total of about 75,000 passengers. On seven days there will be three or four vessels berthed at the quay simultaneously. The highlight will no doubt be on June 14, when no less than five cruise ships are expected. This will be further proof for shipping lines of CCCB's flexibility and professionalism – two reasons for choosing Bremerhaven which have been no secret for a long time.
Three Good Reasons for a Stopover in Bremerhaven
German Emigration Center Over 7 milion emigrants gahtered in Bremerhaven between 1830 and 1974 to board a ship headed for the New World. The German Emigration Center is located on the site where the ships departed from the European mainland. It is Europe´s largest theme museum specializing on the topic of emigration. Elaborate reconstructions and multimedia productions are used to illustrate a trip through time and the history of emigration which spans two centuries. Come face to face with emigrants and their living descendants today. In addition, the German Emigration Center focuses on current aspects of global migration and provides visitors the opportunity to trace their roots.
Bremen Town Hall and Roland Statue Join World Heritage List
On 2 July 2004, UNESCO added the Town Hall and the Roland Statue, two unique symbols of Bremen´s history to the World Heritage List. The United Nations´ cultural organisation has thus acknowledged the outstanding historical, political and artistic importance of the Town Hall and the Roland statue. The `justification´ of the Bremen Town Hall explicity highlights `the outstanding Late Renaissance architectural form in nothern Germany, the socalled Weser Renaissance´. The Bremen Roland, say the UNESCO experts, is `the most representative and one of the oldest Roland statues erected as a symbol of market rights and freedom´.
`The ensemble of the Town Hall and Roland of Bremen is directly associated with the development of the ideas of civic autonomy and market freedom in the Holy Roman Empire´. Distance by bus: 60 minutes
Lütte Sail 2008
From July 23 to 28 in 2008, the international Windjammer Festival "Lütte Sail 2008" will take place in Bremerhaven. This will be a major tourist event, and about two million visitors are expected.
